  • If you own the Pixel 4 or an older model, you should upgrade to the Pixel 7 because your phone isn’t getting security updates anymore.
  • Pixel 5 owners don’t necessarily need to upgrade, but the Pixel 7 does offer some worthwhile upgrades.
  • Pixel 6 owners shouldn’t feel the need to upgrade at all.

Google announced the new Pixel 7 series on October 6, which includes the regular Pixel 7 and the Pixel 7 Pro. As with every new phone release, the biggest question is whether you should upgrade from your current Pixel phone.

Google’s limits for security updates helps clarify when you should upgrade — if your phone isn’t getting security updates anymore, it means it’s time to upgrade, even if your phone is still working fine for you.

But if your phone is still within Google’s security update window, you have less reason to upgrade to the Pixel 7, especially if you’re coming from last year’s Pixel 6 series.

The Pixel 7 is Google’s newest budget smartphone. It features an upgraded camera, a free built-in VPN, and more.

The Pixel 7 Pro is Google’s newest high-end smartphone. In addition to the Pixel 7’s new specs, it features an added 48MP telephoto camera for macro and long-distance shooting.
